At seven-thirty I am havinâ dinner when Erouardâs man Briquet comes in. First of all he tells me that Erouard has got the lowdown on Geraldine. Geraldine went out to Le Bourget aerodrome. She hired a private plane for England. Where she was goinâ to when she gets there nobody knows. So thatâs that. Here is one dame who anyway for the moment is outa the picture.
Briquet then tells me about Juanella. After this baby has her hair done she drives around and does some shoppinâ, after which she gets along to Montmartre to a place called the Hotel Mouton. This Hotel Mouton is a third-rate sorta dump which the French cops have had an eye on for some time. It is one of them places where the funny guys hang out. Briquet sees Juanella go in there anâ sticks around until she comes out. He then goes in anâ flashes his police card at the proprietor, who is a guy who has already done one stretch for receivinâ, anâ asks him to talk. The guy decides to do so. He tells Briquet that Juanella has been enquirinâ about some bozo who has been stayinâ at the Hotel Mouton for some timeâan American by the name of Borg anâ it looks like Juanella wants to see this guy Borg plenty bad. Borg ainât in, but the proprietor says he will be around at half-past eleven that night, anâ has told Juanella that if she will come around at that time she will probably catch him, to which she says she will be there.
Briquet then tells the proprietor that it will be healthy for him to keep his mouth shut about this little conversation anâ not to let Borg know anything about it. The proprietor says this is O.K. by him, that he will stay as close as a clam.
I reckon this is good work, because I think that if I can find out what Juanella wants with this Borg we might get some place. I ask Briquet to tell Erouard somethinâ from me. You remember when I was seeinâ this guy Zeldar I told him to go anâ see Erouard, that Erouard would check up on the businesses that Nakorova was interested in in Holland anâ Switzerland? Now the only way that Erouard can check up is through the consular offices in those places, anâ as I reckon that this business is a legitimate one, the consular reports will be O.K. for the very simple reason that if there is any funny business goinâ on it will be well under the surface, anâ the consular guys will know nothinâ about it.
If this guy Zeldar is crooked anâ if he takes me for a mug he will think that I will be satisfied with those reports, which is where he is makinâ a big mistake, because all I am trying to do is to keep this guyâs mind at rest while I get on with a little investigation on my own.
